Breathing Life into a Palliative Care Day Spa
My interior design journey continues this fall with Commercial II – the design of a day spa for MS patients. I have to admit, this one scares me. But I've always heard that if your goals don't scare you, they aren't worth pursuing. So let's jump right into this worthwhile project!
This dual occupation building will house not only 3,000 square feet of palliative care day spa, it includes a 1,000 square feet residence for the couple that owns and manages the spa.
My project planning always begins with a mood board to help me set the tone of the design concept. The design for this space revolves around nature, with colors and textures pulled from areas near the bottom of a nature reserve in a mild climate. These colors and textures will be used to bring personality to a pretty modern interpretation of this palliative care spa.
The idea for the interior of the spa is to keep the private spaces, such as massage and consultation rooms, grouped together and to group the shared spaces, pool and floor exercise area, in an adjoining space. So let's take a quick tour through my initial floor plan for this MS palliative care day spa.
The main entrance will usher visitors to the receptionist desk, at which they can sign in and gain direction to other parts of the building. To the left of the receptionist desk, guests will easily find the two massage rooms and the consultation room. These rooms are kept to the front of the building so people who do not plan to utilize the shared spaces can come and go quickly and with minimal invasion of privacy.
The accessible restrooms are not far from the entrance to the right of the receptionist desk. The location of the restrooms allows for easy access from all points of entry, exit, and usable spaces. The floor exercise area, swimming pool, and reflection area takes up the majority of space behind the receptionist desk. These spaces are located near exterior windows to allow ample sunlight to stream through.
For maximum privacy of the owners, the residence has been placed at the very rear, running the width of the entire building.
That's a simple and fast overview of this project; I will be back with a more detailed plan once the areas have been completely mapped out using AutoCad – so big chances this will look completely different in a matter of hours (more likely minutes).
